MAY 2013 Misty Reflection, Gudenå at Ulstrup, Denmark I can't get enough of misty moods and one early morning in May, I photographed this magical misty reflection. The mist changed appearance all the time and I ended up with a lot of pictures, the mist gave the landscape atmosphere and an otherwise boring motif became exciting and a bit abstract too. The month of May had a handful of beautiful misty mornings, but it was very difficult to keep up with all the changes happening in nature so fast as it did this spring. After a long and cold winter it was nice to see everything get green and full of life once more, but I wish the spring would not be over already - now summer comes knocking on the door. APRIL 2013 The first Wood Anemone, Mols Bjerge N.P. Denmark This past month became the coldest April in 25 years and it was very dry and sunny too. I photographed this Wood Anemone on a sunny hill facing South early in the month, almost three week before they began to show their white face everywhere. Photographing plants and flowers are exciting and very rewarding, just take your macro lens and start to work, at first you might not see anything at all, but suddenly motifs appear just in front of you. I have always been fascinated by photographing plants and flowers and using macro lenses opened a whole new world of opportunities, when I started making images of plants, more than 15 years ago. I like to use large apertures to soften the surroundings and isolate the main subject, making an artistic feel and creating an image with "flower-power" as I like to call it. FEBRUARY 2013 Snow pattern, Madum Sø, Himmerland, Denmark Almost three months of winter has passed and biting cold weather has dominated most of the month of February, but in the last week we experienced the first sign of spring with the first day with springlike conditions, you could feel the warmth of the sun on your face for the first time this year. The good weather took me by surprise, I simply had too many layers of clothes on and at some point I was almost boiling until I got rid of a layer. The sun is getting stronger day by day and the melting has begun, okay you can't see it on this image from Madum Sø, the largest lake in Himmerland; I was out most of that day enjoying the beautiful weather with a clear blue sky and no wind, most of the snow in the landscape is gone now, but on the lake an inspiring pattern of snow and ice were a great motif for me. JANUARY 2013 Winter Impression, Mariager fjord, Denmark January was a divided month, two weeks with temperatures on the positive side and two weeks below zero day and night. Fjords, ponds and lakes were soon covered by ice and snow-showers covered the landscape with a white carpet. On this impressionistic image I photographed Mariager fjord in the twilight and instead of just making a sharp documentation photo, I tried to make a more artistic impression by moving the camera during exposure. Patterns of snow on the ice, together with the pink pastel coloured sky created this mystic image from another world. (Nikon D700, Nikkor VR 70-200/2,8 II, iso 200, handheld)
MARCH 2013 March Snow, Assentoft, Denmark One afternoon a heavy snowfall arrived together with strong winds, I knew that I had to be out in search of motifs, despite the extreme conditions. Winter weather always look cold and uninviting when you are indoor, but when you are out in it, it does not matter - when you have the right clothes. Snow in March is not unusual in Denmark, but recent winters ended in early March, but this year the winter will not loose its grip. This image is photographed only a few kilometers from my home; I had one motif in mind, photograph Roe deer in the landscape and I got them and as a bonus a fox in a perfect landscape. Dragonfly, Assentoft, Denmark Glistening in the early morning sun, this insect looks like a creature from another planet as dew gathers on its sleeping body. Captured in close-up one September morning, I found this dragonfly totally encrusted in diamonds as it rest on a twig. Dragonflies, take on an unearthly quality as the water droplets form on them, but it is very difficult to find them and you must be very fast taking the photo because the dew quickly disappears. Round-leaved Sundew, Råbjerg Mile, Denmark The meat eating plant Round-leaved Sundew, gets an important nitrogen contribution through its varied diet of small insects which are caught and digested by its slimy leaves. Especially nitrogen is in short supply in the nutrient-poor bogs and this plant has adapted to these extreme conditions it would otherwise only get nutrients from the rain. This picture was taken in the extraordinary nature at Råbjerg Mile in Northern Jutland near Skagen. I put my camera on the ground, the picture was photographed in the scale of 2:1 (double life size) and the backlight is to give the plant life and drama. It is an exciting experience to study the sundew and its catch technique, but one must be very patient and be prepared to get very muddy!
